You only need to look outside to see how prevalent mobile devices are in use. Ever since the introduction of smart devices, their adoption has been rising and is still going strong.
For e-commerce businesses a desktop-only approach is no longer enough. They’ve had to factor in the emergence of mobile and the effect it can have on their business in driving additional sales.
But what’s the current state of mobile? E-commerce entrepreneurs and marketers will find this infographic from JBH Marketing and Smart Insights quite insightful in determining what their strategy for mobile will be. You’ll find a total of 19 facts in the infographic, and we’ve highlighted five statistics you shouldn’t miss.
More global users on mobile than desktop
The people using mobile now outnumbers those on desktops with the gap projected to increase – meaning mobile isn’t going anywhere! And a mobile optimised e-commerce website is a must-have.
Desktop still has conversion rate with 3.41%
But while the number of users on mobile is increasing, conversion still has some catching up to do with desktop. Conversion on desktops is at 3.41%, whereas smartphones and tablet command a conversion rate of 0.92% and 2.86% respectively.
Part of the reason for the lower conversion rates could be that the checkout process isn’t optimised for mobile. Or alternatively, shoppers prefer buying directly from an e-commerce website on a desktop. But if you’re looking to push mobile conversions up, developing an application may be the way to go here.
Smartphones used for pre-purchasing activities
This statistic might shed some light on the low smartphone conversion rate – where 90% of smartphone shoppers use their phone for researching products and comparing prices. This statistic suggests that most people are evaluating products while on the go or watching television. That said, you’ll want to make the process of saving items to wish lists and setting up an account as easy as possible to ensure people will return to purchase from you.
25% of search queries done on mobile
With a significant portion of web traffic coming from mobile device – having a mobile optimised experience becomes even more important. Even though the majority of mobile users will be just browsing your store, you’ll want to ensure they’ll come back to buy from you.
Email opening rates are highest on mobile at 48%
In the past three years, opening rates on mobile have grown by 180%. Which means all those promotional emails you send out will most likely be opened on a mobile device. Which means you’ll want to make sure your emails are mobile-friendly and whenever somebody clicks on one of your links you’ll want to direct them to a mobile-friendly page.
